New Passion Leads to Zach’s First #IndyMini

The year 2020 was many things: unprecedented, unpredictable, unusual — just to name a few. Many can agree that it was a hard year, including Zach Anderson. For Zach, running became his outlet to get through the year (2020).

His new passion for running and desire to challenge himself led him to register for his first #IndyMini! Although it is his rookie #IndyMini run, he is no stranger to the Month of May festivities.

“I have grown up with the Indy 500 on my calendar every year and taking a lap around the world’s greatest racecourse is a once in a lifetime experience. Experiencing that race day excitement motivates me to experience my own personal race day excitement on Indy Mini Race Day.”

Running the #IndyMini for the first time can be intimidating. Here is some advice from Zach to get started:

Photo Contributed by Zach Anderson

“Have a plan. I ran aimlessly without a plan for about 6 months. I built a good base, but having a dedicated plan is a must to stay motivated. Also, shoes! Regular tennis shoes won’t cut it… NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY!”

Another training tip from Zach is to use a coach through the Garmin Watch. Having a guide makes training less daunting and more attainable. And you don’t have to train alone! Zach said, “Sometimes, my dog gets to take part.”  He also enjoys listening to podcasts and Christian Metal depending on what he is in the mood for.

For more training tips and tricks, 2019 Ambassador, Kirstin Maguire, has great advice just for first-timers!

Ready to join Zach and run your first #IndyMini? Registration is open on our website!  Reimagine The Greatest Spectacle in Running with us, achieve your fitness goals, and make the commitment to be part of the 2021 OneAmerica 500 Festival Virtual Mini-Marathon or Delta Dental 500 Festival Virtual 5K. We can’t wait to cheer and encourage participants as they conquer their miles!

More Than a Race — PJ’s #WhyIMini Story

Why do you Mini?

For some, it is a personal goal to conquer 13.1 miles. For some, it is to see Indianapolis Motor Speedway. For PJ, the Indy Mini is a team effort.

Contributed by PJ Sapienza

PJ is a runner with Ainsley’s Angels of America, an organization whose mission is to “build awareness about America’s special needs community through inclusion in all aspects of life.” Runners are paired with a teammate, so that “everyone can experience endurance events.”

Alyssa, PJ’s teammate, is the reason he is running the 2021 OneAmerica 500 Festival Virtual Mini-Marathon. “Alyssa loves to do races and the bigger the better. I regularly get messages from her and she tells me she cannot wait to race,” said PJ.

Outside of running with Ainsley’s Angels, PJ is a run coach through his local running store. Right now, training looks slightly different, as he normally trains with a large group. However,  he now gets together with smaller groups throughout the week and braves the Michigan winter to prepare for the spring race!

To someone who is considering running this race for the first time, PJ says, “Do it. Once you’re signed up, you are more likely to train. I’ve done at least a dozen half marathons and this one is special with the lap on the track.”

Looking forward to race weekend, PJ is excited to “see our fellow Ainsley’s Angels teams from around the country and be able to tackle that course again.” He is hoping to get close to the two-hour mark this time around.

Whether it is to get in healthier shape, set a personal record, or raise awareness for an important cause, the Indy Mini is an experience like no other!

Ready to take the leap and sign up for the #IndyMini? Registration is open on our website! Reimagine The Greatest Spectacle in Running with us, achieve your fitness goals, and make the commitment to be part of the 2021 OneAmerica 500 Festival Virtual Mini-Marathon or Delta Dental 500 Festival Virtual 5K. We can’t wait to cheer and encourage participants as they conquer their miles!

Make a Difference with Your #IndyMini

As a nonprofit, community organization, our mission at the 500 Festival is to produce life-enriching events and programs that celebrate the spirit and legacy of the Indianapolis 500 and foster a positive impact on the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana.

The OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and Delta Dental 500 Festival 5K is the 500 Festival’s largest event with 30,000+ runners, joggers, walkers, and wheelchair participants from all 50 states and 15+ countries around the world each year

Your participation in the Indy Mini supports the 500 Festival’s free youth health, fitness, and education events and programs, which reach more than 100,000 Indiana youth annually.

At a time when students need more support for their overall health and well-being than ever before, your participation can help ensure we can continue to educate young Hoosiers on the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle.

Mental health and physical health are directly linked. Poor mental health can negatively impact one’s physical health as well, leading to an increased risk of certain physical conditions. Conversely, physical activity and exercise are known to increase feel-good chemicals in the brain called endorphins, which can improve mental health and boost mental alertness, energy, and a positive mood.

With students spending more time in front of screens and behind desks, physical activity is more important, yet more challenging, than ever before. In fact, one in six Hoosier children are  faced with childhood obesity.

You can help to positively influence and transform the lives of students all over the state of Indiana by participating in the 2021 OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and Delta Dental 500 Festival 5K.

With your participation, the 500 Festival is able to continue to provide free youth fitness, health, and education programs that cultivate and leave a long-standing, positive impact on young Hoosiers.

The 500 Festival is proud to educate Indiana students on the history, traditions, and legacy of the Indianapolis 500 as well as the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle. However, we cannot do it alone. As the Indy Mini is the 500 Festival’s largest fundraiser, your participation makes a true, lasting impact on the lives and health of young Hoosiers.

THANK YOU to all registered Indy Mini and 5K participants. If you would like to register and support the 500 Festival youth programs and events, please visit indymini.com/register.

You may also support Indiana youth, schools, and communities by generously giving to the 500 Festival Foundation here.

A Tribute to Pat Kennedy

Courtesy of Spotlight Photography

Did you know your official 2021 OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon shirt and medal includes a hidden tribute? That’s right! Take a closer look to try and find it.

The purpose of this year’s hidden tribute in the participant shirt and finisher medal is to honor the life and legacy of Pat Kennedy, a passionate race fan and 500 Festival ambassador, who unfortunately passed away in April after contracting COVID-19. Kennedy was a past 500 Festival Board Director, a board member of the 500 Festival Foundation, and was part of the 500 Mile Oldtimers Organization.

Kennedy was the fourth-generation President of Kennedy Tank & Manufacturing Co., which was a longtime gas tank supplier for the Indy 500. In an IndyStar article on Kennedy’s life, his sister, Ann Bolin, said, “Every single race day, he would say, ‘Today is better than Christmas.’” It is no secret that Kennedy felt at home at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Dedicated to educating others on the history of The Greatest Spectacle in Racing, Kennedy wrote two books: “The Official Indy 500 Trivia Book,” including 704 multiple choice questions, and “Indy 500 Recaps the Short Chute Edition,” which summarizes every running of the Indy 500.

Each year, Kennedy would donate his latest edition of “Indy 500 Recaps – The Short Chute Edition” to the 500 Festival & Indianapolis 500 Education Program, presented by Indiana University Health. His generously donated books continue to be an integral component acting as an encyclopedia of sorts on the subject for the thousands of Indiana fourth grade students in the program. Kennedy’s contributions over the many years have a lifelong impact and will continue to enrich the lives of Hoosiers through his surviving mission to celebrate the spirit and legacy of the Indianapolis 500 and 500 Festival events.

In a special edition of “Kennedy Tank Talk,” the Kennedy family said, “Pat will be remembered as one of the most selfless, generous, and kind leaders in the industry.” Kennedy’s passionate heart will leave a lasting legacy that will continue to further the spirit and celebrations of the 500 Festival and Indianapolis 500.

Let us know if you can find the tribute paying homage to Pat Kennedy in both the 2021 #IndyMini shirt and medal
